The Gnosis of Fear
by E.O.D.

The essential formula of this Rite of Evokation of the Great Old Ones was suggested by a thesis proposed by Soror Purusas 252 of the Yig Lodge. Cincinnati, Ohio. This thesis is outlined in the following extract from a recent letter:
"I believe that fear, in addition to being an enticing energy of its own, also retracts the aura, leaving a space, or a 'hole' as it were, which can be filled, and generally is, by the thing it is afraid of."
In the Rite of the Fungi from Yuggoth, the Victim* is taken by the group to an appropriate locale or 'setting' - for example: deep within a wood at night: in a tunnel or subterranean pit; or in a derelict building or abandoned house. All. the participants wear black clothing and black masks.
Upon reaching the scene of the Working, the Victim spends some time absorbing the psychic atmosphere of fear and unease generated by the alien and outre surroundings. After this period, the Victim is first bound with rope brought for this purpose, tied to an immovable object, and then blindfolded. Once the binding is complete, a prerecorded tape featuring a soundtrack of bestial, barbarous and unhuman noise is played at maximum volume on a portable machine, within close proximity of the Victim. This performance can last from between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the endurance threshold of the individual involved.
During this part of the Rite, the phenomenon of the 'psychic vacuum' effect generated by the intense fear-patterns radiated by the Victim can be utilized by the other members of the group to attract those Denizens of the spaces 'between' the spaces we know. These Denizens surround us at all times, but are screened from our senses by the euclidian spatial structures which we inhabit. Through the release of the Fungi from Yuggoth, stimulated by this Rite, they are able to break through to 'our side' and effect communication with those participating in the Evokation.
* The 'Victim' (or psychic sacrifice) is chosen at random from amongst the group.
