Under the cold waters of northern Scotland dwell the sea people. Ballads singing out of our past tell of the water-women and mwn who take off their seal-skins to lie with a human being, and of their consorts hiding their skins, hence the imprisoning of the silkie. How they must have cried in the cold water's light, watching the far sun sparkling across the waters of their home. But the children borne of their union could sometimes return to the waters. And so the race continues to this day, though only the boldest will venture forth.
