The following pages are from a work in progress; DANCING LIGHT WITH CONGO SQUARE. Any and all comments or suggestions are most welcome.Congo Square in New Orleans is sacred ground. It is the place where Dr. John drummed and Marie Laveau danced in the early 1800's It is the place where all American music was born when African polyrhythms and Western musical tradition embraced upon the Squ ares wide surface. The funk that flows from its heart distinguishes New Orlean's Voodoo from other forms of Voodoo. Haitian Voodoo is not funky. African Voodoo is not funky. New Orleans Voodoo is very funky and this funkiness can be traced directly to Con go Square.
Dr. John and Marie Laveau are two primary characters in this work. These two are the Grand Loa of New Orleans Voodoo. The manner in which they are characterized in this book are the way in which they live in my heart.
The Master of my Head is Blanc Dan-i. This is a "cool" loa that shares many characteristics with Obatala of Santeria. It is a loa concerned with fairness, love, and compassion. The proposed plot of this story resonates with these ideas. For this I thank " Danny Boy"..."Mr. Blanc Dan-i."
