In hieroglyphics the writing of the word staff is a picture of a cane or staff. The glyph for elder is an old man leaning on a cane or staff. The writing of the word "speech" is a cane or staff followed by two phonetic components; the abbreviation for "speech" is simply a cane or staff exactly the same as the glyph for staff.
