The Magickal Record of Louis Martinie': Ocotober 1998

Thursday 1
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple
WILL: Honor and Respect to te loa
LOVE: Order of Service on the drums
SUCCESS: Strong
COMMENT: A pleasure after the surgery. Played sitting down and did no vocal calls but my hands were still sure.

Friday 2
Brandi of Voodoo Antigua had made about 5 calls to get one copy of Mishlen and my drum tape. Her commitment to serve the community is an inspiration.

Saturday 3
Sleep and rest. I keep reminding myself that about a week ago I had serious surgery. So much of interest...if I push myself over much it will take longer to heal.

Sunday 4
Sleep and rest. There is absolutely no pain with my nose. This is amazing to me. I can feel the swelling shrinking by the day. The new air is not entirely pleasant. As if two much air burns. Air and fire. The first time I can breath through my right nostril.

Monday 5
First day back at teaching. Feeling better than I thought. Priestess Muslima called and it looks like we have a ritual on the 30th. I called Priestess Miriam and the Temple has no rite set for this date. With Luis gone, it is more important now that I be available to the Temple and its rites. I do miss Luis.

Tuesday 6
Called Priestess Muslima and confirmed for the 30 Ritual. She is thinking about buying some land in Mexico. Close enough that you can drive to it. Good idea. This is a great festival coming up with much drumming.

Wednesday 7
Home sick. In this two week convalescent period since the nose surgery there has been a hurricane and now a flu. The bent nose with its breathing problems is a legacy from my mother's side of the family the Martinie's. I wonder if I have angered the ancestors on that side of the family?

Thursday 8
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple; Drum Ritual
WILL: Honor and respect to the loa.
LOVE: About 5 drummers and the first dancer of the year. Went through Order Of Service.
SUCCESS: Good . . . dancer partially taken by spirit.
COMMENT: Ah! we, the drummers, are beginning to develop more unity in our playing. Miriam has an invitation to go to Russia. A great opportunity. Two French Canadians were at the ritual. I told them about the surgery and my beginning to wonder if I had offended the French side of my family by the operation. They said definitely not, if anything the new shape of my nose honors my French blood the more. This was good to hear.

Friday 9
Odd day. Practically nothing worked as I expected it would. The small and large came crashing down if I would lift . . . . and raised themselves if I tried to lower. Thought a lot about expectations and went to bed very early.

Saturday 10
RITUAL: Pensacola with Mishlen; To the Sea
WILL: To see more deeply; more wildly
LOVE: Sitting at waters edge. Drew a veve for the movement between Olokun (deep sea) and Agwe (waters surface). Crossroads with clockwise movement from Olokun (bottom of ocean) to La Balane (the whale) to La Serine (Mermaid - mid depth), to Agwe (top of ocean). Balanced Sea cane on my finger. The cane of Legba as the balance beam of the scale. Matched the cane/beam to the horizon of water and air as a consecration.
SUCCESS: The veve brought me great pleasure. A delight in the tracing of the movement between the deep and the surface of the ocean. The staff of Legba / Balance beam / Maat associations are very interesting. They came to me from the night; as , in fact, did the sea cane. As I stepped onto the sand, my hand found the cane on the boardwalk railing.
COMMENT: Working on a figure of Ellegua (possibly called "The Pearl In The Oyster"... the pearl is secret, hidden as is often Ellegua and Ellegua is often an irritant). The sea cane is a good beginning for a figure of Legba.

Sunday 11
Jelly Fish and Dolphins. Sentience and intelligence are not the same set of abilities. Just as the lamas and the crow told me, intelligence is much overrated. A Jelly Fish glides across the sandy bottom...it is hard to tell where the water ends and it's body begins.

Monday 12
Lucinda'a Spell, the movie Mishlen worked on special effects for, had an opening and party. Mishlen has described the surreal scenes during the filming. Especially at Fort Pike in the Rigioletts. The moon and the ancient stones and the costumed characters.

Tuesday 13
Miriam and I met with Jerry the iron out the process of the CD. The drumming at the Temple will be available without coming to New Orleans.

Wednesday 14
Thinking of Luis, drumming at the Voodoo Spiritual Temple is so different without him. I miss him, we played well together. I hope that the new path he has chosen brings him honor, respect, and spirituality.

Thursday 15
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple
WILL: Ritual for a very sick girl; that she may choose life or death
LOVE: Order of Service; particular attention to the ancestors
SUCCESS: A sense of having given something
COMMENT: Calls to the Buddhas for their mercy.

Friday 16
Ah! The spirits have given me an Indian Eagle thermos bottle like the one in the book I am reading. I doesn't work well but looks very fine.

Saturday 17
Complete reading GOD OF SMALL THINGS. A beak book, fascinating for the beauty of its writing.

Sunday 18
Beginning THE PLAGUE. This is a book and an author that has long ago helped to form me.

Monday 19
Voodoo Spiritual Temple meeting. CD and publishing Oswan's material a priority. Creativity is not enough. The innocence of Le Couir Mardi Gras is failing. To create used to be an end in itself, now I am agitated.

Tuesday 20
What can the relationship of kindness to creativity be? A direction without crushing mandate.

Wednesday 21
Compassion and passion . . . Ah! this is of interest. The very form of the words themselves cry out for marriage.

Thursday 22
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual temple
WILL: To Love and its loa
LOVE: Order of Service
SUCCESS: Beauty
COMMENT: A woman was in and said that she had trouble finding lovers. Priestess Miriam replied that all are loved in the Temple. To leave the words of separation behind when you walk through the Temple door.

Friday 23
RITUAL: Voodoo Spiritual Temple at Antonies WILL: To sanctify wedding bride and groom
LOVE: Order of Service with a strong Mama Waters
SUCCESS: Bride and groom well prepared.
COMMENT: Drum head broke. This mirrored breaks in ritual consciousness due to expectations and lack of gratitude. I was given great gifts but they were not exactly what I wanted. I must re...member this when the occasion arises again. Met a Sufi priest at the wedding. He said that he could not dance but his gift was the ability to pray. He said a fervent prayer with an interesting reference to Shaitan. The language he used I do not know.

Saturday 24
RITUAL: Court yard of Home
WILL: Honor to a nightside spirit
LOVE: Andi, staying here from London, drew sigil of Kolifie in the courtyard by the door.
SUCCESS: A comfort; a joining of London and New Orleans.
COMMENT: The sigil was of cornmeal; later that night I placed slugs by the cornmeal to eat. Where the slugs will go from here, I do not know.

Sunday 25
Celtic Nations Festival - Tribute to my French and Mishlen's Scottish, Irish, English ancestors. A fitting start to the rituals for the ancestors coming up next week.

Monday 26
Found a Hallow'een card from my Mother that was put out by "Forget Me Not" press. Bitter sweet beautiful. No, I will not forget and this time is a great reminder.

Tuesday 27
Reserved masses at St. Louis Cathedral for ancestors. This seems to be the first time I could stop at the Cathedral to do this. The hurricanes stopped earlier efforts. Ah . . the Spirits know. This is the time.

Wednesday 28
Fulbright posted again. I am accepted by the committee; I need a suitable exchange.

Thursday 29
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple
WILL: Honor and Respect to the loa
LOVE: Drum Prayers
SUCCESS: Well done; a bit quieter than usual. This is the first of a series of rites.
COMMENT: Very odd, a man who knew Elvis Presley in Germany was partially possessed by his spirit at the ceremony. Very odd.

Friday 30
RITUAL: Voodoo Carefour with Priestess Muslima
WILL: To the ancestors; in particular Marie Laveau
LOVE: At a benefit at a gay lesbian night club. Ayida Wedo and Damballah particularly strong.
SUCCESS: Well done. It is the seriousness and single minded will Muslima that allowed the rite to be so strong.
COMMENT: Ah! A show/ritual right in the tradition of Msl Laveau. Muslima's unswerving seriousness is the key to the success.

Saturday 31
RITUAL: New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple
WILL: Grace to the ancestors. Halloween Ritual.
LOVE: Order of service. Drum Prayers. A number of priestesses present.
SUCCESS: Oh, yes.
COMMENT: Tall creole devotee and her cat were there. The cat was extreme. A ward of the devotee. It bobbed for apples and made a nest of those it retrieved; anxious to show people its treasure. It would bat at the devotee's gold necklace and at one point became so agitated that the devotee took it into an inside room and let it play with some black balloons. I stopped drumming to bob for apples with the cat. I retrieved one and was delighted. So bizarre. I found it difficult to drum in the presence of the cat. Its power was so great. An awful possession. I was careful to feed the drum and the ancestors with parts of the apple. Seeds to the ancestors/earth. Miriam had spoken so much of bobbing for apples in the days before the ritual. The spirits spoke through her.
