The Magickal Record of Louis Martinie': July 1997

Tuesday 1
Voodoo Spiritual Temple Meeting Working with Priestess Miriam on a MR that can eventually form the basis for a book. Tonight Miriam spoke about abused women. She Said that the male is a combination of the male and the female so men who abuse women are abusing themselves. If a male abuses an external female, that attitude becomes internal and heaps abuse on the feminine part of himself.

Wednesday 2
Working in the courtyard cutting a sweet olive tree. What I am doing may kill the tree. I know that many think trees and plants are sentient, I do not. But I believe that all living forms (really all forms) have an integrity that it is good to consider before introducing change. Reread Sidhartha. The necessity of experience. Can the need to experience be satisfied by analytical meditation? Can this type of meditation substitute for harmful experience? I don't know, I do think so though.

Thursday 3
RITUAL: Voodoo Spiritual Temple to Ellegua
WILL: That he open the way to the ritualists requests
LOVE: Order of Service and then all entered ritual area and stepped over coconuts broken and used in the ritual.
SUCCESS: Odd, but then my work with Ellegua has always been odd
COMMENT: That evening I was seeing what search engines turned up if BlackMoon were entered. I got a BlackMoon run by Louis that specialized in industrial music/ Lou Reed. Very odd; that is a path I could have easily chosen....Ellegua.

Friday 4
A quiet Independence Day. Usually you can hear the rain of bullets on the roof.

Saturday 5
Complete 10 pages of the Congo Square Mss.

Sunday 6
Ah! Luis is back. It seems as if the loa did not want me leaving New Orleans for Bloomington as long as he was in Africa. Lets see if plans to travel to Bloomington next week are fufilled. This is the longest into the summer I have stayed in New Orleans. The quiet of Bloomington is good for writing

Monday 7
Work on Mardi Gras section for MoonWeb. Good, Mardi Gras is important in the understanding of Voodoo as it has developed in New Orleans. Costume (to Mask), procession, love of color and form, are all part of the culture. We all become the Gods on at least one day of the year. The Marassa wanted to be included in the Mardi Gras section of MoonWeb. While I was writing one paragraph, the number 2 showed up no less than 6 times. The Twins are in the section.

Tuesday 8
Voodoo Spiritual Temple Meeting
I showed Miriam Houngan Oswan Chimani's Wake on MoonWeb. This is a fine tribute to Oswan. He is re-membered.

Wednesday 9
A great sadness in upon me. I realize that I am looking to much to the World separate from Spirit. There is such a distance between "to know" and "to do." I am so undisciplined.

Thursday 10
Pack...Drive to Bloomington. There is an 825 mile trip between Bloomington and New Orleans. Oh Yes, Papa open the path Mishlen and I are going. I do believe that Luis's return to New Orleans made this possible. The loa keep subtle balances.

Friday 11
Unpack...Drive back to New Orleans.

Saturday 12
Return rented van...Begin drive to Bloomington. It is good to test one's limits. Severe breaks in consciousness during the day. When I am this tired (weary) the still point is overwhelmed. Still,I'm happy to write, I did maintain some bit of detachment from my body's weariness. Maintained enough to not make this weariness mean anything other than that I am tired.

Sunday 13
Drive to Bloomington. Arrive.

RITUAL: At Stupa, Tibetan Cultural Center
WILL: Introduction of Voodoo and Tibetan Currents
LOVE: Circumambulate the path around the Stupa; mixed earth from Congo Square with the ground
SUCCESS: Strong Welcome
COMMENT: Good...I did this before resting. A sense of priority is essential.

Monday 14
Beginning of Khabs Ritual via the Internet.
The spirit of Bloomington is once again with me. It is interesting that I had no feeling for this town till one night I dreampt of Bloomington and there was a direct transmission from Mishlen of her love for Bloomington to me. I woke up with a great love for Bloomington. So quick, over one night. My love for Mishlen and Bloomington has stayed with me.

Tuesday 15
Ah! An e-mail dispute as to the authoring of the Khabs Ritual has taken shape. I take this dispute to be a primary part of the Khabs Ritual itself. The dispute is certainly changing consciousness in various places around the globe.
- The idea of magick as "shaping" the mind is beginning to take hold with me.

Wednesday 16
Work with Mishlen at the Stupa at the Tibetan Center here in Bloomington. A fine solid structure now surrounded by possibly more weeds than path. A good indication that it is the will of Mishlen to act as the Stupa's gardener.
- The Stupa seems to represent a shape the mind can take.

Thursday 17
Reading in the Tibetan writings. Interesting that they use a term that translates as "continuity of consciousness." Reference this to Khabs and Khu.

Friday 18
Last day of Khabs ritual. So I am interested to see if the happenings of these last 5 days fit in some way into the rituals protocol. Will read other magicians MRs with interest.

- The big Haitian exhibit will be coming to the New Orleans Museum of Art. Spoke to the museum about the Voodoo Spiritual temple doing rituals. A concern with the museum being a public owned space and the performance of religious rites (Voodoo) came up. I was asked to call again when I return to New Orleans....we will see.

Saturday 19
Definitely will have a session on "sacrifice" at SummerHawk Festival.
Meditations have increased. They at once make me more stable and more adventursome. They tend to reveal the will in a naked clarity.

Sunday 20
"Bind nothing! Let there be no difference made among you between any one thing & any other thing; for thereby cometh hurt." Liber L; Book 1, Verse 22. Ah! The western Gods speak and the Tibetans seem to have most fully developed the technique.

Monday 21
Work on Blessing of the Drums ritual and on two sessions for StarWood. StarWood has become yearly; this makes it important that I review the year and emphasize new events and changes with the Voodoo Spiritual Temple and myself. This year it is a move toward simplicity. Occums Razor is at its sharpest when dealing with spirituality. The simplicity is most important in two areas; 1)Voodoo being summarized by a simple stick in the ground and 2)the drum as having a mouth, body, and head that it is well to treat as a mouth, body, and head.

Tuesday 22
- Picked up Priestess Miriam at airport. Car with "GO OYO" written on each of the side windows parked in the parking lot of the airport. To say the least, I would expect the weather at StarWood to be stormy.
- The nature of the "I" has been on my mind. The upcoming Festival should be a good place to explore possibilities. Perhaps "I" is not the speaker but a third quality.
- "I seems to be a verb" may be more correct than "I seem to be a verb." The locus of the "I" may not be internal, but in some sort of linguistic hinterland. Interesting that this would make the self as it is usually understood, external not internal. The genetic predisposition to acquire language fits nicely.
-Asked Papa Legba to open the gate at StarWood. Shortly thereafter the strand on my watch broke. Makes sense...timeless.

Wednesday 23
Arrive at about 7:30 in the morning.
Marty is working on his study of "self." interviews Much thinking and discussion of the "self." Marty is particularly interested in possession, the loss of self. The question he poses is,"What is lost during possession."
- Marty heard me say, "Beyond Possession." I have no memory of using this phrase. Interesting topic.
- You shape your mind like a key to open certain doors. Legba's Key...the Mind. Magick or Sorcery is a shaping of the mind. Shaping the mind as a particularly configured key to open a particular door.

Thursday 24
- Miriam's workshop on the Metaphysics Of Ritual. Miriam emphasized the unity of all traditions. It is less important if one is Wiccan or of the Voodoo...look to yourself and look to the Universal Spirit. That is central, not the tradition. Attainment comes from within. She also emphasized the importance of children to the metaphysical community.

- I was given a leaf of tobacco grown on the land. Very sacred. It occurred to me that I should hold the smoking that I did in the past as sacred because it brought me to the point I am at now. If I do have a problem with my lungs, then it follows from necessary events.

- My workshop on New Orleans Voodoo...I emphasized that a priest or priestess lives in the doing. No amount of titles or credentials either written or verbal from Spiritual Houses makes one a Priest or Priestess so much as acting as one. If you want to know if someone is a priest or priestess, look at how they act. Brought up two concerns that seem to grow in importance in the space created where Voodoo meets Paganism...Possession especially when it occurs around the Festival Fire and Sacrifice, especially animal sacrifice. Tried to communicate that possession is a natural state in Voodoo ceremonies and, most importantly, where the loa are called which can be around a general Festival Fire. My primary point concerning animal sacrifice is that within Voodoo there is a wide range of beliefs and practices. The range is from a torturing of the animals sacrificed to not tolerating even the use of tallow in Temple candles in that the tallow contains the suffering of animals. I said that I prefer to use Red Palm Oil rather than animal blood.

- Michael said that the Master of the Head could be the opposite of the manifested personality and abilities. This Master appears so that the person could develop needed qualities.

Friday 25
- Drum Workshop; Rhythms of the Voodoo Spiritual Temple...Taught rhythms from the Voodoo Spiritual Temple and emphasized marrying these rhythms with the characteristic Festival eighth note kata. This type of kata is very military and maybe constitutes a cultural karma. The importance of this kata is that it provides a clue or element of group identity. This can be illustrated by marroons approaching a village in the New World jungles and recognizing their own tribe or a friendly tribe by the style of rhythms being played. This could have also been important considering the many tribes creating the numerous dance circles on Congo Square.

- The woman I mistook for Mishlen had Blanc Dan-i come to her and told her how to make money. It was teaching handicapped kids to twirl batons tipped with ribbons of cloth. She is making money doing it, which was her need, and the kids benefit from a unique experience. She and I have a bond.

Ritual: Blessing of the Drums, 30 to 40 drummers
Will: Strengthen the voice of the drums. So that the loa can speak through the drums more perfectly.
Love: The drums were dressed, fed, and their heads cleaned with cigar smoke. The drums were left to themselves to journey across the Waters to the Land of the Invisibles. We sat around the fire and prayed and were concerned for the drums in their journey across the Waters. The attitude was as if a companion or a child had gone on a dangerous journey. Then I blessed the heads were blessed with various earths...in particular an earth from Congo Square. It was important that the drummers could see the attitude of the blessing...a warm, and happy welcoming of the drum back from its journey. From now on, the drummers could now perform the rite themselves if they wished, this was the teaching element of the ritual.
Success: Strong, from the comments. For me, good but not as strong as WiccanFest. Still, very good.
Comment: The large number of drummers in the rite may have dampened the power a bit. I believe that about 10 drummers is optimal.

Ritual: To Obatala; Blanc Dan-i
Will: Unity, peace, and respect at the Festival
Love: Flags in the Opening, Litany of the Loa, Papa Labat, the Oguns Iron Joe and Annie Christmas, Erzulia, Le Grande Zombi...Blanc Dan-i (Yenvelou)
Success: Iron Joe and Blanc Dan-i were strong, Possessions during Obatala/Dan-i. Erzulie and Annie Christmas were weak.
Comment: This is like two years ago when Erzulie would not come through with any strength. I had heard that an individual at the festival was working Erzulie for very destructive purposes with a good measure of success .This could render the space unclean for Erzulie to descend. Really, I don't know.

- All four of us lost things at the ritual. Miriam a ring, I lost both drumstix, Marty lost a flashlite, and Linda lost a shirt. Next year it would be good to bring some small objects as offerings. The loa, as they descend here, want a bit more than the food and drink offerings. Perhaps some divination concerning Erzulie is needed.

Saturday 26
- Miriam's workshop on Voodoo Ritual...She spoke on the khabs and the khu (male and female ) and the necessity of bringing them together. She said that this union had been done at birth in the past in Africa. Now the new initiate must have his or her Khabs and khu joined in the first stages of confirmation. The new initiate becomes a child again.
- A friend at the Friday nite ritual said the ritual was unusually calm. Much calmer than last year. I explained Obatala/Blanc Dan-i and showed her the card in the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot. She was surprised to see the snails in the cards painting. She said she had a slug on her blanket when she got back. Very nice.
-A friend made the comment that the top of the crossroads belonged to the Barons and that the bottom belonged to the Guedes. Very insightful.
- Thoughts on possession as an antidote to attachment to the body. An antidote to identifying the body with the essential self.

- In a practice before the Big Fire, a baby frog jumped among the feet of the drummers. A few people tried to catch the frog without success. The frog jumped toward me and I picked it up and carried it to the side of the field telling the frog that I was saving its life and it was to speak to its parents (Hecket) and ask that the nights fire be a success.
Someone yelled "Sacrifice" as I was walking with the frog. Exactly correct, the frog was now on a "sacred" pilgrimage. To be made sacred is to be about sacred things.

- Big Fire...Drummed with the dancers. Baba Olotunji came in and sat before us. He played for awhile, clapped, he was full of a childlike spontaneous joy. He blessed the fire when he was helped up. There is much grace in being so close to such an elder.
Drummed till late or early.

Sunday 27
- Over all the Fest was more smooth, more laid back than usual. a number of people commented on this.
- Driving back to Bloomington saw only two stars in the sky. One directly in front of Miriam and one directly in front of me. These were the only stars in the sky, and they were in a straight line from one another. I have never seen anything like this. It looked as if someone had laid the stars out using a ruler.
- What asks the question; "Who am I?" If the "I" is a dialogue between the two halves of the brain as Marty is hypothesizing, does the nature of the dialogue matter? If the question, "Who am I?" can be asked and answered then whatever it is that asks and answers may be larger, more inclusive than the "I."

Monday 28
Miriam spoke at Marty's Indiana University class. Two points she made were very important. The first being; you have created the thing for which you seek. This statement has a tremendous beauty and truth to it. Secondly, she said that at the Temple she does not push possession even if the person is showing the preliminary signs. Miriam said that people should realize that possession comes from a ripening of an internal state. If she were to push the possession, too many people would make the mistake of believing that the possession was something she "caused" in them. They would look to her and not to themselves and the loa.

Tuesday 29
To airport with Miriam at 5:30 am. We are always so busy in New Orleans. StarWood is a good time for Miriam and I to relax and talk. Still, I have probably had about 5 hours of sleep a night during the Festival. Rest and Sleep. An excellent StarWood.

Wednesday 30
Unpack, all things to their place.
Mishlen observed that the question of WHAT you are is more powerful that WHO you are. This What, asked in a deep sense, opens more doors.

Thursday 31
RITUAL: Expedition in Crystal Serpent Temple
WILL: Receptive
LOVE: Before great mirror. TiKala around neck, slight oxygen deprivation.
SUCCESS: Native American spirits asserted themselves.
COMMENT: Make more offerings to "those whose bones lie within and upon this land." Work on ceiling of Crystal Serpent Temple. Some water damage from big rains. This physical labor creates a strong connection to the Temple.
