EQUIPMENT

Scout uniforms and equipment are available at the Dan Beard Scout Store on Victory Parkway in Cincinnati (513) 961-0500. These items are also available by mail order by calling 1-800-323-0732. Talk with older Scouts to learn other sources of equipment and what works the best.

The Troop operates a uniform exchange which collects uniform parts and provides them to other Scouts.

All equipment should be marked with the Scouts name. Engravers work very will on metal such as cooking gear. Colored nail polish also works very well identifying utensils which tend to become intermixed.

The Troop also sells extra neckerchiefs, hats and one piece troop numerals (940).

The suggested equipment for camping is listed on page 51 of the Scout Handbook. The troop provides the tents and patrol cooking gear.

The following is a suggested list for new Scouts.

  1. Uniform with patches; Hiking boots are very important
  2. Boy Scout Handbook
  3. Sleeping Bag
  4. Flashlight
  5. Poncho
  6. Utensils (heavy plastic knife, fork and spoon are OK)
  7. Mess Kit (plastic plate, cup and bowl are OK)
  8. Towel, wash cloth, soap, tooth brush & toothpaste
  9. Extra clothes depending on the weather
  10. Backpack for camping trips; duffel bag for summer camp

TROOP 940 POLICIES

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Scouts are expected to attend all Troop meeting on the schedule. The SPL and Patrol Leaders are expected to attend the PLCs in addition to the Troop meetings.

Attendance will be taken by Patrol Leaders at all Troop meetings and reported to the Scribe. The SPL and ASPL will report their own attendance to the Scribe. ANY Scout who misses 25% or more of the scheduled Troop meetings (on a cumulative basis) will not be allowed to participate in Troop outdoor events or hold a Troop position. On an exception basis only, this requirement may be waived if excused in advance by the Scoutmaster. For the purpose of this policy, attendance is defined as being on time, in uniform, and participating with good Scout Spirit. Scouts who are late, not in uniform, or who fail to participate as expected will get credit for one half of an attendance.

UNIFORM POLICY

All uniforms should be neat, clean and fit properly.

CLASS AA UNIFORM

Worn for any event in which the Troop will be seen by the general public or other Scouts. The Class AA Uniform consists of a properly attired Scout Shirt, Troop Neckerchief and Troop Hat. Scout pants, belt and socks are encouraged. Neat, clean blue jeans may be worn instead of Scout pants. Other parts of the official Scout Uniform are optional.

CLASS A UNIFORM

Worn for normal meetings and events. It is worn unless Class AA or B are specified. The Class A uniform consists of a properly attired Scout shirt and any Boy Scout neckerchief, scout pants or blue jeans. Scouts who are Star Rank or higher may wear a bolo style tie in place of a neckerchief. Headgear is optional but, if worn, must be Scout related. Other parts of the official Scout uniform are optional.

CLASS B UNIFORM

Worn whenever the planned event involves strenuous physical activity. The Class B uniform consists of any Scout related Tee shirt. Head gear is optional but, if worn, must be Scout related. Other parts of the official Scout uniform are optional.

DUES POLICY

Dues are $30 per year payable in September of each year. Payment by check made out to TROOP 940 is requested. The canceled check is your receipt. Troop registration for new Scouts is a one time fee of $25.00 and includes a Troop neckerchief and hat.

The Scout account may be used to pay dues.

If dues are one week late, the Scout will receive a written notice unless satisfactory arrangements are made in advance with the Scribe. If dues are three weeks late, the Scout will not be allowed to participate in outdoor events and will lose eligibility for any office or leadership position unless satisfactory arrangements are made in advance with the SM. If dues are four weeks late, the Scout will be removed from any office or leadership position held unless satisfactory arrangements are made in advance with the Scoutmaster.

DISCIPLINE

The Scouts are expected to participate in the meetings. If the Scouts do not participate or are disruptive, action will be taken to correct the situation. Under normal situations, the Patrol Leader or other Scout Leader will issue a warning to misbehaving Scours. If the activities continue, the Patrol Leader will have the Senior Patrol Leader or other Scout Leader speak to the Scout. Should the misbehaving continue, the Scoutmaster or other adult leader will review the situation with the Scout. This may result in the Scout being prevented from participating in the next Troop activity or to call the Scoutís parent to take him home.

EVENT PAYMENT POLICY

The Troop will have to charge an amount of money for most outdoor events to cover the cost of transportation, food, supplies and fees. Information will be provided in advance. Payment is generally requested at the week preceding the event. If a deposit is requested by a specific date, please pay by check made out to TROOP 940. Such deposit will be your notification of intent to participate, and will be forfeited if you later elect not to participate. The balance of the total cost will normally be due at the meeting of the week preceding the event, and is requested to be paid in cash.

Most outdoor events require advance notification of intent to participate, whether or not a deposit is requested. When such notification is required, only those Scouts and adults who notify by the specified date will be guaranteed to participate.

In most cases, parents or guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend outdoor events with the Troop. Events for which adequate transportation cannot be arranged through parent or guardian participation will be canceled.

RADIOS

Radios, tape players and TVs are generally prohibited on Troop events and during Troop meetings. The one exception is Walkman type personal radios and tape players under the following conditions: 1. On Troop-sponsored outdoor events (Not Council or District events) 2. In the immediate campsite area of the Troop 3. During free time 4. Personal use only (canít be heard by others). All such use of Walkman type radios and tape players is subject to further restrictions by the Scoutmaster. Radios, tape players etc. are prohibited at all Troop meetings unless in conjunction with an official ceremony.
