ROUTES

ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

One city out of the many in and around Butler County which were "stations" on the Underground Railroad was Newport, Ohio. Levi Coffin, a Quaker, and his wife, Catherine, took runaway slaves from Newport, were several routes converged, to the North . . . and freedom. During their stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Coffins helped 1,300 slaves along the Underground Railroad.
This map shows the routes leading into and throughout Ohio. The routes were fairly haphazard, so as to confuse the slavecatchers even more. Oxford, Ohio, did not have a main Underground Railroad route going through it, but there were several minor roads that went along the outskirts.
