| One city out of the many in and around Butler County which were "stations" on the Underground Railroad was Newport, Ohio. Levi Coffin, a Quaker, and his wife, Catherine, took runaway slaves from Newport, were several routes converged, to the North . . . and freedom. During their stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Coffins helped 1,300 slaves along the Underground Railroad. | ||||||||||||||||

| This map shows the routes leading into and throughout Ohio. The routes were fairly haphazard, so as to confuse the slavecatchers even more. Oxford, Ohio, did not have a main Underground Railroad route going through it, but there were several minor roads that went along the outskirts. | ||||||||||||||||
