THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

BY MOLLY AND KATE

The Underground Railroad wasn't really a railroad. It was a maze of pathways used by black slaves to get to freedom. The name came from the way the runaway slaves seemed to disappear "underground" when they were being chased by slavecatchers, or the slaves' owners.
This map depicts all the main routes in the eastern half of the United States.
