- 3-12-01: Bob Rich has organized some training rides that will start March 31st.
- 3-4-01: The QCW race was held today, the first race of the 2001 Ohio Valley Racing Spring Series. At first, the weather was miraculously good. Later, it was horrible and I've not before seen as much post-race shivering. Kudo's to all that raced and especially to those that marshalled. Photos are posted here.
- 2-23-01: Toby toby.costello@ae.ge.com has issed a timely Newsletter (PDF). Don't forget our race on March 4 in Morrow, and see the announcement below for a race this weekend.
Doug D. passed on something he heard about: There are two local League of American Bicyclist
instructors, and one of them, Carl Bishop, is offering a course hosted by OKI
(Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky) regional council of governments. The course is called
"Bicycling for Fun, Fitness and Transportation" and is tentatively planned for 4
Wednesdays begining 2nd May, 6:30-8:30 pm, at the OKI office near downtown Cinci.
The instruction will include bike handling in traffic, fundamental
maintenance/repair, and touring, The format will be mostly classroom, with a
bike ride at the end to apply/test some of the learning.
The cost will be about $20 and there will be limited space. This is
not a kids course, but would be open to responsible young adults, (or adults)
who need to learn/upgrade their knowledge of safe cycling on the roads.
Interested people should contact Carl Bishop at carlbishop@worldnet.att.net.
- 2-5-01: Some words from our leader: "There will be a QCW meeting for officers and those planning on racing for QCW during the 2001 season on Tuesday Feb. 13, 2001 at 7:00pm at Wright Bros. Montgomery Road. Items to be covered include QCW Morrow race and the 2001 racing season. I have been thinking of a QCW stage race later in the year. I would like to present my ideas for discussion. And 2001 ride schedule (locations, times, ride leaders). Looking for base miles? I am the Ultra Marathon Cycling Associations Hub ride leader for Cincinnati. I will lead rides (dependant on weather) every weekend through May. The distances will be 100+ with shorter options available. - Thanks, Bob Rich." rwrich@prodigy.net
- 1-30-01: There will be a race on Feb 25 promoted by the Ice Cream Boyz, the Flatter than Hell Road Race. Details. This is the week before the Spring Series begins (the first race is the QCW Morrow event on March 4). John Chinkes has remotely updated the Ohio Valley Racing Website.
- 1-29-01: We had a good turnout at the Banquet. It was good see the Kids on Bike's kids and their parents. The raffle was terrific. People enjoyed the photo-video piece covering the past two years (I must shoot more video this year!). Congratulations to Peter Wimberg for the QCW Time Trial Award for 2000. And we have new officers! Bob Rich will be president; Doug Dobrozsi, vice-president; Evan Sayre, sec'y. Dave Carr will remain treasurer.
The Diva's are at it again with a women's MTB clinic on March 31st at Caeser's Creek State Park. More info can be found in the flyer (458KB).
- 1-23-01: Here are several items:
You can get an application form for the May 12-13 Tour of the Scioto River Valley at www.tosrv.org. This is one of the largest rides in the country, 210 miles over two days with great support and beautiful weather (for arctic ducks, perhaps). You must do this ride at least once if you want to call yourself a cyclist - and the new half-TOSRV option does not count. The same folks organize the June 16-23 Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (www.goba.com).
I would normally not consider doing GOBA, but I have more freedom now that I've left Generous Electric for independent pursuits (www.AustinImage.com). And I've had an excuse for TOSRV the past two years while photographing the Flying Pig Marathon. But they've moved the Pig to May 6 (which now conflicts with Cincinnati Cycle Club's Chili ride).
Planning for the Ohio Valley Spring Series is well underway. QCW's race is the opener on March 4th in Morrow. Either race or volunteer, please.
Don't forget the banquet this Saturday. Doug Dobrozsi will have a few of his Kids on Bikes members present, so it's your chance to do a little mentoring, too.
- 01-01-01: Toby has produced a Newsletter for the new year, here is a PDF version.
- 12-20-00: QCW Banquet The banquet will be held on January 27, 2001 6:00PM at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Pleasant Ridge. I've been recruited to put together a slide show/video piece - if you have any photos to share, let me know.
Directions: from Montgomery Road about 0.25 mile northeast of Ridge Rd. turn north (left if coming from Ridge Rd., right if coming from Kenwood) on Parkman Place. The church is on the left one block from Montgomery Rd. There is plenty of street parking available.
Toby tobycstl@yahoo.com will soon issue a newsletter with more details. Chip chipe@iglou.com has got the ride line going, and wants to schedule a trip to Cave Run next week. Let him know what you'd like to do.
- 11-14-00: QCW Race Team / Club Organization Meeting
We need help! Cincinnati's oldest and largest bicycle racing club is planning for the 2001 season. Anyone who is interested in becoming a part of Queen City Wheels as either a racer, race organizer or general club or race volunteer is invited to attend. If you have any questions contact Chip Ellison at: chipe@iglou.com
- Tuesday, 11/21/00 - 7:00 PM
- Wright Brothers Cyclery - Harpers Point, Montgomery Road just north of I-275
- 10-10-00: Doug Dobrozsi: We've arranged a cyclocross race in Loveland on 21 October (actually two, the other is being done by the CycleSport sponsored Revolution team on 3 Dec).
We have a kids clinic as part of the 21 Oct event. The flyer has all
the details. Especially note, we're asking any senior racers who will do it to
spend 30 minutes or so and ride some warmup laps with the one or a few of the
kids who sign up, offer a bit of coaching.
- 10-6-00: Lots of Cyclocross action this fall.
- 8-10-00: Tour de Loveland included some exciting racing. The $20,000 prize list for the 1-2 crit drew a big turnout and very serious racing.
- 7-31-00: I had a big weekend of cycle races: Wendy's Stage 5 on saturday, a very interesting crit in Columbus, and one day of road races at the Masters Nationals, somewhere in Indiana. I posted some photos on my photography website, mainly to let VeloNews pick some out.
Don't forget the big cycling events are coming up in Loveland this saturday.
Walt Petersen sent me a link to an interesting Sports Illustrated/CNN column about how Lance Armstrong should get a bit more attention then, for example, golfers.
- 7-18-00: Wright Brothers has QCW jerseys in stock, same as last years.
- 7-18-00: From Doug Dobrozsi: "The organizer for the Loveland Criterium, Mike Milidonis at the Greater Cincinnati Sports Corp., has asked me to put the word out for volunteers for the Loveland Criterium events on 5 August. They are looking for help to marshall the course, aid in registration, etc.
They need help anytime from about 1 pm through the rest of the day. Volunteers may contact the office at 345-3054 - ask for Gabrielle Nordman, Volunteer Coordinator.
There are lower cat. races in the early afternoon. Tour de kids around 6:15.
Pro 1-2 at 7:30. There is some additional information at Truesport."
- 7-18-00: From Bob Lyon: "The P&G Women's Health pro cycling team will be in town this weekend in preparation for the Wendy's classic that begins next tuesday. The team will join
us for a ride on Sunday morning (July 23) between 8 and 8:30 at the trail in
Loveland. We plan to do a moderate 40-50 miles as they have a crit race the
following.
The P&G team has had a great year with a third place finish in the Olympic Trial
road race (Mina Pizzini), a stage win at the Sea Otter (Heather Cole) and
numerous top 10 finishes by Kori Kelly, Kery Hellmuth, Cheryl Binney and Ashle
McCullough."
- 7-9-00: Just back from two days of shooting at the Dayton Pro-Am. Exciting racing. I particularly liked when the women were led down the wrong streets back into town, with the police desparately removing barricades seconds before the peleton blasted through. The photo appearing here today shows a CycleSport rider who was forced into the barricades (not seriously hurt).
- 7-6-00: Final Ault Park Race was last night. Photos here.
- 6-13-00: Third Ault Park Race tomorrow night. Photos and Video here from last week.
Check out some crit announcements on the races page.
- 4-28-00: Doug Dobrozsi has a web page for his Kids on Bikes program. Check it out!
- 4-27-00: Chip has a few items from the QCW meeting held earlier this week:
- time trials start next week. if anyone is interested in helping please leave me a message on the ride line.
- QCW club ride and picnic being planned for June. Stay tuned for details.
- if your uscf license renewel was returned unattached, QCW is in good standing w/ USCF. I will have a letter posted on the web page soon that riders can download and use to show their clab status.
- the club plans to support both Cyclebration '00 and Doug Dobrozsi's kids cycling program.
Nick Sapp has produced a website for the Harbin Park MTB Trails.
- 4-25-00: An updated training ride list has been posted (Thanks, Chip!).
- 3-27-00: Great racing yesterday in the Ohio Valley Spring Series event near Oxford. Another Austin Image venture makes its debut with a big Quicktime race movie (fixed 1:30 PM). Peach Video needs to book some pre-July weddings - big discount!
- 3-19-00: www.Cyclebration.org!
- 3-5-00: Great day in Morrow. 183 racers, definitely spring-like. Multimedia here. A round of applause for the ladies in the kitchen.
- Check out Coach Carl Online
- 2-27-00: Big turnout for first race of the Ohio Valley Spring Series. A few photos here. Maybe more and a QuickTime movie later.
- 2-19-00: Doug Dobrozsi has just returned from the Olympic Training Center where he attended the Getting Kids on Bikes Conference, and is keen to establish some kid racing this year. He could use a little help here and there.
- 1-30-00: The Ohio Valley Spring Series has a website!
- 1-8-00: As you know USA Cycling has replaced the district rep system with a fewer number of full-time Regional Coordinators. Here is a note from the USA Cycling website: "Judy Miller of Bethlehem, Pa., will coordinate the Mid-Atlantic Region (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia). Miller has served as a USCF district representative since 1991 and is an official for road, track and mountain bike. She has held clinics for both officials and organizers and has seen membership increase in her district during her tenure."
- 1-1-2000: We had a great ride this morning, despite several Y2K-related incidents. Doug was arrested near the Powder Mill tower after a Warren County Emergency Response canine unit detected traces of nitrocellulose on his shoes. Denny learned the hard way that his derailleur was not Y2K-compliant. Leon's GPS sent a spurious command to his directional control unit, causing a power surge that failed his chain, while Alan's heart monitor read his age incorrectly and commanded inappropriate power levels.
- 12-30-99: First ride of the Millenium Year, meet at McDonalds (won't be open) at 8:30 AM for an off-road ride.
- 12-15-99: Nothing better than a rainy weekend for creating a poster, this one for the Moab trip.
- 12-15-99: QCW.org has been the site of the month on Channel 9's CinciNow.com site. Click on the "Tech" tab at the top. Time to consider an IPO for QCW!
- 11-30-99: John has got a page up for the Year 2000 Spring Series. (And he and Beth will be staying put in Cincinnati!) There is a meeting this Saturday at 4 PM.
- 11-21-99: Some of us rode the Eastfork Trail today. Very pleasant!
- 11-16-99: Epilogue issued on Moab trip. I need your photos for poster! And I need to swap wheels with someone...
- 11-8-99: I rec'd a newsletter today - thanks, Toby. A computer glitch may have deleted your membership, so if you do not get one soon, call the Pelo line. Don't forget the QCW/WB CX race this weekend; Chip needs help, so call the ride line. Moab was awesome, tough, fantastic, tough, spectacular and tough.
- 10-29-99: Some of us are going to Moab! In fact, the bikes are on their way now, courtesy of GT and Pat. See if your webmaster can manage a traveling web show, iMoab.
- 10-27-99: The ride line is back in action.
There is a Wednesday 6:00PM Road Ride with lights, leaving from Oakley Cycles parking lot.
The Landen Halloween CX race has a new venue - Harbin Park.
Cannondale has donated a CX CAAD 3 frame set that will be given away at the Nov 14 race at Cowan lake. Racers and volunteers may register at the QCW races on Oct 31 and Nov 14. You must be present to win. Chip needs volunteers, as it happens, on both days, including set up from 8:00 to 9:30, registration from 9:00 to 10:30, and tear down from 12:30 to 1:30. Free race registration for anyone who helps.
- 10-26-99: Cyclocross at Harbin Park: Wonderful day last Sunday. Some photos here.
- 10-22-99: Ohio Valley Spring Series 2000: There will be a planning meeting in Cincinnati the second Saturday on November from 4pm to 6pm. (source: John Chinkes)
- 9-29-99: Ohio Valley Cyclocross Series! The winter series is starting up soon. The first race is being promoted by Bio Wheels at Fernbank Park on October 10 - more info here. Al and Sheila Senft has informed me about about two races they are promoting: Clif Bar and Campus Cyclery are sponsors for two races Oct. 24th & Nov. 7th at Harbin Park; a Mongoose mountain bike will be raffled off. More info here.
- 7-24-99: Just back from the Major Taylor Velodrome. Very interesting. Very hot - we all wished it were an indoor facility. And rain canceled the last race. Few spectators and rather few racers, too, it seemed to me - I think there would be many more if located around here (Paducah race may have cut into the field, though). This was their 100 Year Major Taylor Cyclebration Celebration; continues today (Saturday). The antique bicycles were very interesting.
- 7-12-99: Nick Vehr and Lee Skierkiewicz went to see the USA Cycling folks last Friday. The mayor told me the meeting went well. The idea is to get one of the Olympic trials next year (men or women - they will be held separately). Please send money, for the Olympic rings cost extra.
- 7-9-99: Chip goes to the races! Read all about it.
- 7-9-99: I've put a few photos of the Nationals here (forgive the sales pitch).
- 7-1-99: Final Ault Park race was last night. Don't you wish there were more? The Cycle Sport team was a force to be reckoned with this year in the 20-lap race; their riders got first and second overall, Glen Schoenung got first. Eric Knight did not race last night, suffering from a broken jaw during the Nationals Criterium, but got first overall anyway for the 40-lap race. Next big races are in Dayton and then the Tour of Ohio.
- 6-28-99: The Nationals are over. The Rescheduled Time Trials went off without a hitch, though many riders were missing. Colin Vogt and Jeff McLane got a bronze medal for the Tandem event. Last night, Dave Wenger, Saturn/Wright Brothers/QCW Elite rider, entertained the crowd by going out early. He was caught by four riders, including Patrick Heaney. This group rode free until late in the race when a group of nine caught them. Dave held on for tenth and got himself featured in the Enquirer today.
The event went very well three of the five days. The canceled Time Trial will be the subject of contention among several parties - a "failure to communicate" sort of thing. It sure takes a lot of cooperation to bring such an event off well. The Friday event had more easily identified points of failure, but affected only one of the ten races (whew!) held that day. The press enjoyed putting the bad stuff on Page 1, while putting the good stuff on the sports page. We could've - should've done better, of course.
- 6-24-99: The Time Trials were cancelled! How could this happen? Everyone, particularly John Gatch, worked very hard to get the best possible courses. Many people arrived at the same question: How can USA Cycling Officials wait until the morning of a major national event to inspect the course? And then flunk it? The remaining events will go on.
- 6-23-99: A memorable night in Ault Park, as three national champions and their teammates inspired our valiant local riders to a 27.1 mph average. "There was no rest on the backside", said Scott Nichols, "I was spinning out in my 12 and was still falling back." It really was a joy to watch this special race.
One of these same champions appeared at the Tuesday Night Time Trial, and did an easy 21-something, 15 seconds off the course record.
I was too excited to get the finishes. National Time Trial Championships tomorrow.
- 6-22-99: Shhhh! It has been a closely guarded secret, but it can now be revealed: the actual National Elite and Junior Road Championships are taking place in Cincinnati this week! Can you believe it? Time trials, junior road race, senior road race, criterium, hundreds of cyclists.
- 6-7-99: QCW is arranging a road trip to the Major Taylor Velodrome. The impetus is to get people more familiar with track racing, particularly Loveland citizens (and maybe a few generous corporate souls that will pay for it). It will be Friday, July 23; buses depart at 5:15. Cost is $25, which includes admission and dinner. Reservation forms will soon be available at Wright Brothers, or you can leave a message on the Pelo line.
- 6-3-99: Please contribute to the Roy Roberts Memorial Fund. Contact Dan Roketenetz for more information.
Courses are just about finalized for the Nationals. The Junior Road Race course will be at NKU. The Northern Kentucky portion of the Senior Road Race course has been designated the Roy Roberts Memorial Loop. Volunteers are needed! You can volunteer online. Roy would be pleased.
- 5-2-99: Great races were held today in Blue Ash. Everyone wore their old Cyclebration T-shirts. The Cycle Sport guys did OK. Photos.
Scott Spees has provided information on the Germantown Race Series.
- 4-25-99: The second crit of the Ohio Valley Spring Series took place on the grounds of the Union Life Insurance. Well, not a crit, sort of a circuit race, maybe even a bit like a figure-eight race. Interesting. A few photos here.
- 4-21-99: The first crit of the Ohio Valley Spring Series took place at Newmark Center on a day featuring a variety of weather. The 3-4 race was marred by two accidents, and several riders have learned not to get too close to a particular rider in red. Brad Watkins won the 1-2 race, beating out a duo of GoMart riders as well as the rest of a 6 man break for his first race as member of the Wright Bros/QCW elite team. A few photos here.
Note that the Ryle High School location which is two weeks from this Sunday, Mothers Day, has been moved to Union Central Life.
- 4-20-99: David Wenger has provided another excellent report on the success of the Wright Brothers/QCW Elite Team.
By the way, remember the old Wright Brothers store at the corner of Montgomery and Kemper? Flattened by the April 9th tornado, now just a slab. The new store was unaffected. Charlie's son Austin was not at his mother's house that fateful night on Cornell Road; his empty bedroom was disintegrated.
- 3-31-99: David Wenger, member of the Wright Brothers Team, aka the QCW Elite team, has provided an account of the team's good showing last weekend.
- 3-24-99: I have finally posted some photos of the Redlands Classic. One of the images (ikon.jpg) is of Kirk Albers.
- 3-16-99: Curtis Zimmerman sent me an interesting story of his exploits in California.
- 7-19-98: An entry-fee reimbursement program has been devised for 1998.
